On 7th April 1991, Puthur police station in Cuddalore district was attacked in the wee hours by Tamil chauvinists in a bidto loot weapons from the Police Station. The attack was repulsed by the alert Sub Inspector Sundervadhanam and a Policeman K Rajendran who were on duty at the station. In the unforeseen and well -planned attack, the sub inspector was seriously injured while the Policeman Rajendran was killed in front of the Police Station itself. The brave resistance of the policemen prevented the perpetrators from looting the weapons and they had to flee from the station empty-handed. The case was finally solved with the arrest of the Tamil chauvinists and they were arraigned before the court of law. After a lapse of 23 years, all the 8 criminalswere convicted and sentenced  to undergo life imprisonment. The judgment was handed down in the last week of March 2014.

At the time when the incident took place, Mr S.R. Jangid, IPS., was the Supt of Police of Cuddalore district. His meticulous formation of special teams and guidance led to the timely detection of the case.
